As Malibu Boats continues to grow, so does the opportunity for repurposing material and giving back. A few months ago, Tim Martin and Mark Monger asked if there was anything we could do with the windshield shipping container lids. The wood lids are made of Oriented Strand Board (OSB and were placed into the trash daily. They suggested calling Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit that works in local communities to build affordable, decent housing. The future homeowners help build their homes with the help of volunteers and then have a plan to pay an affordable mortgage. Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity impacted more than 13 million people in over 1,400 US communities and approximately 70 additional countries. For the past 25 years, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity has brought the opportunity for homeownership to 114 families. Additionally, more than 40 seniors have been helped through their Critical Repair program.

On July 19th, 2019 Malibu Boats began providing OSB lids that Habitat for Humanity repurposes. Loudon County Habitat for Humanity stated that 28 sheets of OSB would cover the outside of a house, and 45 sheets would sheath a roof. Material that might otherwise be discarded is now helping Habitat make homeownership a reality. This donation will save Habitat approximately $12,000 each year and comes at a time when construction costs continue to increase.

Employees from the Loudon County Habitat for Humanity pick-up the OSB weekly from Malibu Boats headquarters in Loudon, TN. It is loaded onto Habitat’s trailer, where it can then go into a house and change lives. Tony Gibbons, Executive Director with the Loudon County Habitat for Humanity stated that “our mission is accomplished through creative ideas such as this one. We are pleased to partner with Malibu Boats who found a great way to continue their commitment to the environment by supporting the local community through Habitat’s efforts with affordable housing.”

In less than a month, Malibu Boats provided over 113 sheets of OSB to Habitat for Humanity. “It is an honor for Malibu Boats to participate with and support Habitat for Humanity. It is an outstanding organization focused on helping people in need. Especially gratifying is that Malibu’s partnership was inspired by two plant team members who saw the opportunity and came up with ideas for Malibu to support this worthy organization,” said Jack Springer, CEO of Malibu Boats. With the help of Tony Gibbons, Malibu is excited to begin this partnership with Habitat for Humanity to continue giving back to the local community.
